If you're planning your Sunday around the Browns, here's the big question: who plays quarterback? Deshaun Watson is in the NFL's concussion protocol, and Shedeur Sanders would get his first start of the season if Watson can't go at New Orleans. Watson took a helmet-to-helmet hit in the first quarter at Pittsburgh, was cleared, and then reported symptoms Tuesday morning that began Monday night.

Coach Todd Monken said Wednesday that missing practice is hard on a quarterback: "If you're not able to take the team reps and the throwing reps, how do you get the timing with your receivers?" Sanders said Wednesday, "Overall I'm just excited for the opportunity."

  • Kickoff: Sun., Nov. 8, 1 p.m. ET at the Saints
  • Depth chart: Watson, Sanders, Dillon Gabriel, then rookie Taylen Green
  • Sanders' rookie starts: 3-4, seven touchdowns, 10 interceptions
  • Last Sunday: Steelers 27, Browns 6

Watson was cleared twice before he went into the protocol

  1. Nov. 1Watson takes a helmet-to-helmet hit on the third play, drawing a roughing penalty.
  2. Nov. 2Watson passes a morning evaluation, then feels symptoms that night.
  3. Nov. 3Watson reports symptoms and goes into the .
  4. Nov. 4Browns announce the protocol.
  5. Nov. 8Browns play at the Saints at 1 p.m. ET.

Guardians coach Joe Torres is leaving to be the Reds' pitching coach

If you follow the Guardians, here's an offseason loss: coach Joe Torres is leaving to become the Cincinnati Reds' major league pitching coach, the Reds announced, replacing Derek Johnson. He reunites with Terry Francona, who managed Cleveland for 11 seasons. Torres, 43, spent 10 seasons in the organization, the last five on the big-league staff alongside pitching coach Carl Willis.

3.65combined Guardians ERA in 2024 and 2025

That was the lowest in the American League and second-lowest in the majors.

Torres said he values that continuity: "Cleveland does a great job with the continuity throughout the organization and the communication and processes in place." Cleveland will now look for a replacement. Willis is returning for 2027.

  • Guardians' ERA rank, 2022-25: sixth, ninth, third, fourth
  • Pitchers 30 or younger with career WAR of 1+: 21, most in baseball
  • Cleveland won three AL Central titles in that stretch

The Wrap

Cleveland just had a stretch with hardly a drop. It went 15 days in a row without even a trace of rain, from Oct. 18 to Nov. 1, which tied for the sixth-longest completely dry period in Cleveland Hopkins records dating to May 1938. Showers finally showed up Wednesday. Our umbrellas are glad to be back on the job.
